Beef & Vegetable Rolls in Wine Sauce

Use teriyaki beef which is lean and thinly sliced. Red meat with fats trimmed off is a good source of protein and vitamin A. Do not over cook the beef. D.O.M. and other varieties of 'tonics' are often recommended to help the new mother regain strength and keep out the cold or 'wind' that is said to afflict new mums.
Serves: 2 people

5 - 6 teriyaki beef slices
1/2 small cucumber
(skinned, core removed and shredded)
1/2 small carrot (skinned and shredded)
1/2 small turnip (skinned and shredded)
1 large onion (cut into rings)
300 ml beef stock
2 tablespoons fresh milk
1 tablespoon D.O.M. or Wincarnis
2 tablespoons Japanese barbecue sauce (Yakiniku No Tare)
1 tablespoon cornstarch
(dissolved in a little water)
1 teaspoon dark soya sauce
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon margarine
salt and pepper to taste

1. Mix shredded vegetables with a little salt, pepper and a few drops of sesame oil.
2. Place a small amount in the centre of each beef slice. Roll firmly and secure with a toothpick.
3. Heat margarine and lightly fry onions till fragrant. Add stock, dark soya sauce, Japanese barbecue sauce and season with salt and pepper.
4. Thicken gravy with the dissolved cornstarch and add milk, D.O.M and sugar.
5. Place beef rolls in pan, cover and allow to simmer over low heat until meat is cooked. (Turn them over regularly to ensure even cooking)
6. Turn off heat. Lift rolls out, and serve immediately. If you plan to serve it later, keep the gravy separate, microwave it and pour over rolls just before serving.
