Paediatric Society Steps Up Efforts Against Pneumococcal
Disease
First
walk for babies and toddlers to engage and educate parents
The
Singapore Paediatric Society (SPS) launched a month-long Pneumococcal
AWareness
(PAW) Campaign to address critical information gaps among
parents
about pneumococcal disease (PD). The campaign kicks off on
10 June with Singapore’s very first PAW Walk, a fun-filled
mini walk for babies, toddlers and their parents. SPS is
calling on parents to pledge their support to fight against
this devastating infection that causes serious conditions
such as pneumonia (lung infection), meningitis (infection of
the brain covering) and bacteremia (blood infection).
The
PAW Walk, took place at Bishan Park, features an
informational trail to engage and educate parents,
encouraging them to share what they have learnt with at
least three other parents/caregivers. The PAW Walk also
entertained kids with activities such as a drama skit with
song and dance, a bouncy castle, balloon sculpting, face
painting and a competition to discover the cutest PAW baby!
Emphasising
the need to continue education about PD, A/Prof. Daniel Goh,
President, SPS, said, “We are pleased with the
achievements of last year’s PAW Campaign; recent research
revealed that 21% of Singaporean parents are now aware of
PD, up from 8% last year2.
While this is progress, awareness levels can be improved.
The Singapore Paediatric Society would like to further
enhance awareness of health issues like these to empower our
parents to better
understand
and take advantage of developments in medical science and
improve the health of our younger generation. We believe
that a healthy childhood is the first step towards a healthy adulthood.
Also,
prevention is certainly better than cure and since
immunisation is one of the best ways to prevent disease, it
is vital that parents understand and take control
themselves. A/Prof. Goh continued, “In this public
education campaign, we hope to enhance parents’ awareness
and understanding of pneumococcal disease and the
availability of prevention through immunisation and make a
decision on the health of their young children.”

KidzGrow has revamped its
website with the award winning KidzGrow Online child
development tracking programme. KidzGrow Online was specially
designed to empower parental involvement in their children's
development from 3 months to 6 years of age. A team of child
development specialists and IT professionals put together
hundreds of child development milestones, professional advice
and suggestions intending to empower parents to fully enjoy
the journey of their children's growth in the crucial early
years. The Enterprise Challenge(TEC) and the Ministry of
Community Development, Youth and Sports(MCYS) provided a
development grant for the programme. A pilot trial
