It’s time for your child to head to school, a preschool that is. And while this can be a very exciting time for mum and dad, there are no doubt some worries as well – Will my child be able to cope? How do I choose the right school for my child? How will the teachers treat my child? Parents, you’re not alone. Those nagging worries are perfectly normal but you’ll be surprised just how well your child can thrive in the right environment. Here’s what you need to know about choosing a preschool and making it work.
Just How Important is Preschool?
Early childhood is a crucial stage of life in terms of a child’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social development. Brain development is at its highest so a child will need and want to learn new information at a rapid pace. Preschool provides a rich and positive environment for doing so and this sets the foundation for later school success and overall academic achievement. A child also learns how to raise his hand, listen, take turns, share, help one another, say please, apologise, speak in front of a group etc – important social skills that enable a child to interact appropriately and effectively with others. In addition, a child will learn to build trusting relationships with adults outside the family. By learning to be independent, a child’s sense of competence and self-worth will grow as he learns to take care of himself and help others. A high-quality preschool should give parents the assurance that their child is well cared for, is enjoying activities and making friends — and is building the knowledge, skills, and confidence to do well in life.
