Crushes are a common experience for kids these days. The average age cupid’s arrow is hitting is lot sooner than parents may think – or be prepared for. These feelings are not only normal but is an important developmental milestone for children. Yes, I can attest to that… since Tristan had his first crush way before he was even three years old!
Puppy love can start even in preschool with a playmate attraction but it is more typical around five to eight during those early school years. Though such ‘attractions’ are generally short-lived – sometimes lasting no more than even a day – the child does care about the pal but usually bounces back quickly and moves on.
Preschoolers are generally interested in everything about their world, including sexuality. They are highly affectionate and enjoy hugging other children and adults. They begin to be more social and may imitate adult social behaviours, such as holding hands and kissing. So, if your junior exhibits these characteristics, do not be overtly affected; they’ll soon outgrow it.
Valentine’s Day gives us a chance to not only to relight the spark we have with our special someone, but also to help it burn brightly for another year. Even on a tight budget, a memorable night of romance and fantasy can be yours by using your imagination and remembering this: you can be anywhere your heart desires with the right music, the right lighting and the right wine.
On that note, we at Motherhood magazine would like to wish one and all a sweet Valentine’s Day and a Happy Chinese New Year!
