Caesarean and Vaginal Deliveries
A study by Dr. Mark B. Landon of Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health has found that women who have had several previous caesarean deliveries do not face more risk when attempting a vaginal birth, compared to women who have had only one previous c-section.
The study also revealed that uterine rupture, which is a serious complication of labour, occurred in nine out of 975 women who had had multiple previous caesareans and in 115 of 16,915 women with a single prior caesarean, which is not a huge difference from a statistical standpoint.
MRI Treatment for Fibroids
KK Hospital is the first in Southeast Asia to use MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) technology to treat fibroids, a benign growth usually found in the uterus. The new treatment, which is non-surgical, uses MR-guided ultrasound waves. Since June 5, the hospital has treated five women using this method. About 20 percent of women above the age of 35 are prone to developing fibroids.
Breast Milk Helps Tiny Preemies
A study which appeared in the July issue of Pediatrics has revealed that preemies weighing less than 2 pounds 3 ounces, when fed with breast milk in the hospital, do better on tests of mental development later in life than did others fed only formula. It seems that the ingredients in breast milk such as fatty acids help the brain to develop properly.
